Those with the highest Page Rank (PR) rule the organic search results. The old adage of "its who you know" is especially true in the world of getting ranked. Page Rank is the currency of the internet and you really cannot buy your way into the top positions. It is a matter of planning and hard work and what we SEO Practitioners call the "grunt work" of getting your listings to lofty locations on the results page.
There is no magic formula or silver bullet to increasing PR. It gets down to experience, good planning and consistency of effort. In a nutshell, PR is a numerical value from 0 to 10 which weights the importance of your page(s) on the internet with 0 being nothing and 10 being the highest.
In order to get a better feel of PR from a practical point of view, we recommend installing the Google tool bar that includes the Page Rank meter. In your day-to-day surfing of the Internet, when you get to a page you like or dislike because they are better than yours, compare your equivalent web page to their page rank. If that page has a higher rank than yours and the content is relevant to your page, save it in a favorites folder so your SEO Pros can evaluate its usefulness to your own optimization efforts.

Forward or Redirect: That is the Question |
If you are building a new web site or changing pages, make sure to have a transition plan that includes setting up redirects of your old pages to your new pages. This is true even if the page names have changes or have been replaced by more than one page. This can get complicated but if you have a plan from the beginning it will help insure that you don't lose you current positions in search indexes. Use 301 redirect statement in either your .htaccess file or web page header to let the engine spiders know that you have "moved permanently" from one location to another. This is much better than a domain or page forward because it accomplishes two actions at once: Forwards your visitors and the engines to the correct location versus a plain old forward which just takes care of getting your visitors to the correct page. |

Looking for Links in all the Wrong Places |
"Link juice" is the phrase we often use to describe the transfer of Page Rank or Weight from one page to another. I'm sure you've gotten the emails or calls that say for the low, low price of $9.99 you can get listed on hundreds if not thousands of web site directories and link exchange services. Be wary. Mass linking can do more harm than good, especially if where you end up is on wrong side of town or what the SEOers call "bad neighborhoods". A bad neighborhood is a site or set of related sites that have 0 page rank, blacklisted or are know spammers. Don't worry if they put your web site in their directory without your permission, the real problem is if you have a link to that site on your web site. A good tool for checking out your link neighborhood can be found at: http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm. Text Link Checker tool. |

SEO Tip of the Month:
It is well known that Google handles as much as 60-80% of the world's searching on the Internet depending on the survey source. However don't underestimate the importance of other search engines, such as Yahoo, MSN, and niche specific search engines. Searchers may find web pages via Google but then use another engine to complete the search and actually find the company they want to contact. Our research suggests that those who use this search method tend to have higher conversion rates than those who stick to only one engine for their searching. |
