Do You Know Who Your Customers Are? |
One of the ten commandments in the business world is "Know Thy Customer". How does knowing who your customers are help you with your Internet Marketing and SEO efforts? In many cases, it plays a key role in defining the core strategy that drives your SEO efforts and determines where to fine-tune your results.
There's two somewhat divergent philosophies when it comes to optimizing a web site. One says that SEO should be done after a web site goes online only making changes and additions to the site based on actual visitor and search engine traffic. The other approach is to plan and architect every aspect of the web site so it will be search engine friendly from day one of its initial release. The reality is that you really have to do both if you want to get results.
Planning such as Keyword Research, Competitive Analysis, and Link Building assessment are key building blocks to a solid foundation for getting your site ranked. However one must continue the process of optimizing keywords, links, and web pages because one cannot completely predict how or what the engines will do when they get to your site. In particular, it is important to monitor and evaluate how visitors, spiders and bots see and index the site. In the case of visitors, tracking hits and traffic data will be important to measuring your conversion rates and factors. |

Geo-Targeting: Finding Conversion Sweet Spots |
If you know who your customers are, do you know where they are coming from? Do you know what countries, cities, states, and postal codes have the highest conversions and profit margins from your web traffic? Designing an SEO Program for certain geographic areas is often called "geo-targeting". One of the points of geo-targeting is to find your geographic conversion "sweet spots".
For example, an odd fact is that Seattle residents purchase more sunglasses per capita than any other US city even though they have way above average number of overcast days. If you sell sunglasses online this may or may not play itself out for your particular web site, but there is all the reason to make Seattle one of your target markets. Chances are with all factors equal you will find that Seattle brings in more traffic, but that does not necessarily mean you will have higher rates of conversion. Test your theories with real data, but always be on the look out for those areas that have better conversion rates and then refocus your SEO efforts accordingly. |

Sitemaps versus Sitemaps |
SEO Panda is often asked "do we need a sitemap for our web site"? Our reponse is which one?: navigational site map or search engine sitemap.
There are two different types. A navigational site map is a table of contents directory to all of the links on your web site. This site map can be used by visitors to easily locate and navigate to a specific page on your site. Also it is a good idea to have one that engines can follow because that will provide extra insurance that bots and crawlers find all of your content.
The other type of site map is one specifically made for search engines typically written in XML that lists the full paths for crawlable pages and objects on your site. In that way, you are telling the search engine where to find your most important content. This does not mean that the engines will only index the pages you list in your XML site map. They will attempt to find any and all objects that they can index naturally. The purpose of creating an XML file named sitemap.xml is to give the engines as much information as possible about the location, priority and freshness of your web content. |

SEO Tip of the Month:
PPC versus Organic: Suzy Asks: Is it better to spend your marketing dollars on PPC (paid per click CPC cost per click) or Organic which does not cost per click? As in most things it depends, even though Organic does not cost per click and 80% of clicks are on organic listings versus paid, PPC campaigns are very useful. In particular, PPC is effective for testing the click power of certain keywords and anchor text used in your link. With PPC you can limit your spend with a not to exceed daily budget. You will see results much quicker than organic, and you can use your findings to support or build SEO for the organic listings. Multiply the results you get from PPC by 4 to estimate what results will be achieved if the same listing were organic. |
