Positive and Negative Reviews: Good for Biz |
If you have been hiding under a rock and hoping that none of your customers, ex-employees, or disgruntled housewives of disturbed former vendors will write negative reviews and comments about you or your business, think again.
Don't shy away from a verbal battle on the Internet, it is an inevitable fact in today's Global, Connected world. In fact research has shown that a few negative reviews together with a reasonable amount of positive reviews is actually more beneficial than all positive ones. As the old adage goes: "You can make some of the people happy some of the time, but you can't make all of the people happy all of the time." Most readers understand this and expect to see good reviews mixed in with a few negatives as being more representative than having all five-star ratings.
In fact a big trend in the field of SEO is called "Reputation Management" or presenting an accurate representation of your business image. There is really no way to "erase" a search engine listing that appears on page one, but you can force it off page one with the proper SEO. |

PDFs and SEO |
Should you include PDFs in your optimization strategy for your web site? The answer is a definite Yes. PDF are the standard for sharing and displaying documents on the Internet. The question is: Can Search Engines find them and optimize them accordingly to a specifc strategy?
You have seen and maybe even quite often Search Engine Listings to a PDF that has a non-sensical title and description not related to the content of the PDF. This is because the Search Engine is trying to make sense of PDF document that is not probably optimized. Most Search Engines esp Google can index PDFs, but some work is required to get it properly optimized.
First off, make sure you actually have text in your PDF not just images. Next make sure you have a document that is structured with text that follows your SEO objectives for that document. The "reading order" is the natural way in which the Search Engine sees the text in your document. The "reading order" can be viewed with a PDF creation and editing tool such as Adobe Acrobat by selecting Advanced>Accessibility>Touch Up Reading Order form the top menu bar. Use the Touch Up Reading Order feature to change the order in which text gets read or indexed by the engines. You can also use PDF tagging feature to force engines to read your document based on your tag structure. Engines also see links in PDFs also think about using PDFs as part of you internal and external linking strategy to increase visibility and authority of your site.

SEO: Science or Art |
Is the skills required for optimizing your web site based on art or science? Both. Its takes a healthy measure of both to design, develop, deploy and maintain a properly optimized site. The Science of SEO is based on several fields of expertise including Information Technology, Psychology, Marketing, Statistics, Software Programming and Expert Level Knowledge of how the Internet works.
We would prefer to call SEO Experts "Practitioners" because no matter how much knowledge or skills you have, practical, up-to-date hands-on expertise is the most important factor in determining the end result of your efforts. Reason being is that this field is constantly evolving and changing so that it is important to keep up to date and on-top of current trends in order to maximize the return on your efforts. |

SEO Tip of the Month:
Hosting Location and Duplicate Content: Many companies use the strategy of developing multiple sites in order to expand or enhance their positions on Search Engines. Two problems can exist with having multiple sites: 1) Duplicate Content and 2) DNS and IP information related to the sites. The combination of these 2 factors can result in getting your site bumped off page one or even delisted. The reason being is that if you have 100s of sites with very similar content and all residing on the same server then Engines are generally going to see this as spam or duplicate information that is wasting their indexing resources. Solution: Create Sites with Unique content that are hosted under different name servers and IPs with name servers being the most important. |
